New York City is not the capital of the USA, or even New York State (that is Albany to the north), but as home of the United Nations, the city is perhaps the world's capital, and certainly its largest diplomatic centre. The Big Apple is the most populous city in the USA and its business, financial and trading organizations are significant players in the nation's economy and in the world. New York is also one of the world's most important cultural centers with hundreds of world-class museums, galleries, and performance venues.
The city is divided up into five boroughs: Manhattan Island is in the middle, The Bronx on the mainland to the north, Queens and Brooklyn on Long Island to the east, and Staten Island across the harbour containing the Statue of Liberty is to the south. Manhattan (pop. 1.6million) is the most densely populated borough and home to most of the city's skyscrapers. Manhattan is loosely divided into the downtown, the business centre, midtown, the cultural centre, and uptown regions.
New York's food culture, influenced by the city's immigrants and large number of dining patrons, is diverse. Jewish and Italian immigrants made the city famous for bagels and New York style pizza. Some 4,000 mobile food vendors licensed by the city, many immigrant-owned, have made Middle Eastern foods such as falafels and kebabs standbys of contemporary New York street food. The city is also home to many of the finest haute cuisine restaurants in the United States.
The citywide Subway system is the longest in the world, but with so much to see on Manhattan, make sure you take comforable walking shoes.
Bordering the Hudson River on the west and Central Park on the east is a vibrant district. Theatre Row is the popular name for a section of 42nd Street in New York City. Located in Midtown Manhattan between Ninth and Eleventh Avenues, the name comes from the numerous off and off-off Broadway theatres that line the street.
Fort Washington on the north side of the district was a fortified position near the north end of Manhattan Island and was located at the highest point on the island. The fort was held by American forces as the British completed their occupation of New York City in 1776 during the American Revolutionary War. The insurgents, now renamed as patriots, protected the fort throughout the war. The grateful New Yorkers named the I-95 George Washington Bridge in honour of the man who ran off to fight another day. I-95 leads to, amongst others destinations, New Jersey, Long Island and the I-80 all the way to Colorado and LA.
Central Park is bordered on the north by West 110th Street, on the west by Central Park West, on the south by West 59th Street, and on the east by Fifth Avenue. Along the park's borders, these streets are usually referred to as Central Park North, Central Park West, and Central Park South, respectively, while Fifth Avenue retains its name along the eastern side.
While much of the park looks natural, it is in fact almost entirely landscaped and contains several artificial lakes, extensive walking tracks, two ice-skating rinks, a wildlife sanctuary, and grassy areas used for various sporting pursuits, as well as playgrounds for children. The park is a popular oasis for migrating birds, and thus is popular with bird watchers. The 6-mile (10km) road circling the park is popular with joggers, bicyclists and inline skaters, especially on weekends and in the evenings after 7:00p.m. when automobile traffic is banned.
