New York City is not the capital of the USA, or even New York State (that is Albany to the north), but as home of the United Nations, the city is perhaps the world's capital, and certainly its largest diplomatic centre. The Big Apple is the most populous city in the USA and its business, financial and trading organizations are significant players in the nation's economy and in the world. New York is also one of the world's most important cultural centers with hundreds of world-class museums, galleries, and performance venues.
The city is divided up into five boroughs: Manhattan Island is in the middle, The Bronx on the mainland to the north, Queens and Brooklyn on Long Island to the east, and Staten Island across the harbour containing the Statue of Liberty is to the south. Manhattan (pop. 1.6million) is the most densely populated borough and home to most of the city's skyscrapers. Manhattan is loosely divided into the downtown, the business centre, midtown, the cultural centre, and uptown regions.
New York's food culture, influenced by the city's immigrants and large number of dining patrons, is diverse. Jewish and Italian immigrants made the city famous for bagels and New York style pizza. Some 4,000 mobile food vendors licensed by the city, many immigrant-owned, have made Middle Eastern foods such as falafels and kebabs standbys of contemporary New York street food. The city is also home to many of the finest haute cuisine restaurants in the United States.
The citywide Subway system is the longest in the world, but with so much to see on Manhattan, make sure you take comforable walking shoes.
The Upper East Side is a neighbourhood of Manhattan between Central Park and the East River. This 1.8 square-mile (4.7km²)community, with elegant rows of landmark townhouses, once known as the 'Silk Stocking District', has some of the most expensive real estate in the United States, and is believed to be the greatest concentration of individual wealth in the nation.
The Upper East Side is also notable as a significant source of political fundraising in the United States. Four of the top five zip codes in the nation for political contributions are in Manhattan. The top ZIP Code, 10021, is on the Upper East Side and generated the most money for the 2004 presidential campaigns of both George W. Bush and John Kerry.
Madison Avenue from 60th Street well into the 80s is the monied crowd's main shopping strip, recently vaulting ahead of Hong Kong's Causeway Bay to become the most expensive retail real estate in the world. This locality has the highest concentration of stores in the United States with more than 1million USDollars in annual sales each. The Upper East Side stretches from 59th Street north to about 96th Street. Embedded within the Upper East Side are the neighborhoods of Yorkville, centered on 86th Street and Third Avenue, and Carnegie Hill, centered on 91st Street and Park Avenue, and Lenox Hill centered on 69th Street and 1st Avenue. Its north-south avenues are Fifth Avenue, Madison Avenue, Park Avenue, Lexington Avenue, Third, Second and First Avenues, York Avenue, and East End Avenue.
The area is host to some of the most famous museums in the world. The string of museums along Fifth Avenue fronting Central Park has been dubbed "Museum Mile." Among the cultural institutions on the Upper East Side:
Metropolitan Museum of Art,
Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum,
Whitney Museum of American Art,
Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum,
National Academy of Design,
Neue Galerie,
Frick Collection,
Museum of the City of New York (north of 96th Street),
The Jewish Museum,
The 92nd Street Y,
Museum of American Illustration,
Goethe-Institut New York,
The Asia Society,
El Museo del Barrio.
The area is an educational Mecca and intellectual bastion and the neighbourhood has a long tradition of being home to some of the world's most wealthy, powerful and influential families and individuals. It borders Midtown East to the south and is on the East River Drive with obvious access to the Manhattan waterways.
