New York City is not the capital of the USA, or even New York State (that is Albany to the north), but as home of the United Nations, the city is perhaps the world's capital, and certainly its largest diplomatic centre. The Big Apple is the most populous city in the USA and its business, financial and trading organizations are significant players in the nation's economy and in the world. New York is also one of the world's most important cultural centers with hundreds of world-class museums, galleries, and performance venues.
The city is divided up into five boroughs: Manhattan Island is in the middle, The Bronx on the mainland to the north, Queens and Brooklyn on Long Island to the east, and Staten Island across the harbour containing the Statue of Liberty is to the south. Manhattan (pop. 1.6million) is the most densely populated borough and home to most of the city's skyscrapers. Manhattan is loosely divided into the downtown, the business centre, midtown, the cultural centre, and uptown regions.
New York's food culture, influenced by the city's immigrants and large number of dining patrons, is diverse. Jewish and Italian immigrants made the city famous for bagels and New York style pizza. Some 4,000 mobile food vendors licensed by the city, many immigrant-owned, have made Middle Eastern foods such as falafels and kebabs standbys of contemporary New York street food. The city is also home to many of the finest haute cuisine restaurants in the United States.
The citywide Subway system is the longest in the world, but with so much to see on Manhattan, make sure you take comforable walking shoes.
West Midtown is the part of Manhattan which is home to such world-famous commercial buildings as Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall, and the Empire State Building. Across the East River is the location of the home of the US tennis open at Fushing Meadows. The district on the west is bordered by Central Park; at the south is Union Station and the main arterial roads are accessed via the Queensboro Bridge and the Queens Midtown Tunnel. Road connections to the north are simple on East River Drive (Roosevelt Drive) and Broadway which can take you all way into the heart of upstate New York and the state capital, Albany. The Carl Schurz Park is a 14.9 acre public park at the edge of Yorkville, overlooking the waters of Hell Gate, and is the site of Gracie Mansion, the residence of the Mayor of New York since 1942.
Home to the United Nations on the southern border, there are many sights to see on the river. Midtown Manhattan is indisputably the busiest single commercial district in the United States. The great majority of the city's skyscrapers, hotels and many apartment towers lie within Midtown. More than 700,000 commuters work here and the area also hosts many tourists, visiting residents and students. Some areas, especially Times Square and Fifth Avenue, have very popular clusters of retail establishments.
