Norwich (pop. 350,000) in Norfolk is a relatively isolated city with no motorway links. It is a popular destination for a city break and major attractions include Norwich Cathedral, the cobbled streets and museums of old Norwich, a Norman Castle and the ultra modern Forum.
Norwich Market is an ancient market place, established by the Normans between 1071 and 1074, and is today the largest six days a week open air market in England. There are two shopping centres in the city, The Mall Norwich and the more recent Chapelfield shopping centre. The Mall sensitively accommodates new retail space in the historic city-centre environment. The building is largely concealed underground and built into the side of a hill, with a public park created on its roof in the area south of the Castle.
The city's economy, originally chiefly industrial, has changed throughout the eighties and nineties to a service-based economy. Aviva (previously Norwich Union) still dominates these, but has been joined by other insurance and financial services companies. Norwich is also famous as the home of Coleman's Mustard, founded in 1814.
There are 2 trains per hour from London Liverpool Street to Norwich taking just under 2 hours, and also direct services from Cambridge and Peterborough. Norwich Airport is 2.5 miles (5.2 km) north of the city centre and has good connections to Amsterdam, most British cities and a limited range of European destinations.
