Derby, located in the East Midlands, was awarded city status in 1977 by Queen Elizabeth II to mark her Silver Jubilee. It combines a vibrant city scene with historic buildings and the glorious countryside of Derbyshire and the Peak District.
Derby is served by frequent express services from London St. Pancras and the city centre is approximately 7 miles off the M1, junction 25. The nearest airport is East Midlands Airport.
The most famous building in Derby is the historic Cathedral built early in the 16th Century. It's impressive Perpendicular Tower, the second highest in England dominates the skyline and provides views over three counties.
Derby was the birthplace of the industrial revolution and was the site of the first-ever factory in England, the Silk Mill, built in 1702. Today, Derby is home to Rolls-Royce, Toyota, Bombardier, Alstrom and the famous Royal Crown Derby, manufacturers of porcelain pottery, fine tableware and ceramic figures.
There are a number of events and festival hosted in and around Derby including the annual CAMRA Beer Festival, the County Fair at Chatsworth Park and the late summer classical music concerts at Darley Park.
