Darlington is a town in north east England in the Tees Valley area of Durham. The town is famed for its involvement in the burgeoning railway industry of the early 19th century.
Darlington has been a borough and the site of an important market since Norman times. In the 17th century, the town became a popular residence for members of the Quaker faith and by the 18th century there was a prosperous community in the town. Among them was Edward Pease, a highly influential figure who helped develop railways in the area.
1825 saw the opening of the Darlington and Stockton railway line, the world’s first steam-powered railway, which paved the way for the railways we use today. Darlington Railway Museum now documents this era as well as the role Darlington’s railways played in the town for years to come.
Darlington’s well-developed railway connections now mean that its main train station runs regular services to cities across the UK, including London, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Birmingham.
The Pennines, Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors are all within close proximity of the town.
