In 2002 Preston was awarded city status and is now the largest city in the county of Lancashire. Preston was historically a major port and industrial centre and today has a strong economic and retail base.
With a population of 130,000, Preston is growing both physically and in terms of profile. Now, the city's driving vision is to be the third city of the north west, after Manchester and Liverpool.
Its reputation as an attractive place to live, work and invest in has seen major expansion over recent years and is set to continue further with the progression of major projects including the Tithebarn scheme, which will regenerate the city centre. Preston is also home to the University of Central Lancashire, which is now the fourteenth largest in the UK.
Preston is a culturally diverse city, with communities from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds living side by side. The various cultures are celebrated with a host of unique festivals throughout the year, including the Caribbean Carnival, Mela and the Tringe Festival.
Outside the city boundaries there are a number of villages which provide a peaceful place to commute from, such as Warton, a village on the Fylde; Broughton, a village four miles north of Preston city centre; Salmesbury, a small village that’s home to a large modern brewery supplying Boddingtons and Heineken; and Kirkham, an agricultural town that lies midway between Blackpool and Preston.
Another option is Lytham St Anne’s, a seaside resort sometimes seen as a smaller and more genteel alternative to nearby Blackpool. The town of Chorley has inherited its truck-manufacturing industry from the neighbouring town of Leyland. Buckshaw Village is a new residential and industrial area between the towns of Chorley and Leyland and is one of the largest urban development sites in the north west of England.
