Milano, as it is known in Italy, is a city of 1.3million in the Lombardy region of North West Italy.
The city is a worldwide commercial and financial centre, and argubly the world capital of fashion. Indeed the English word 'milliner' is derived from the name of the city. The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in the Piazza Duomo (Cathedral) is reputed to be the world's oldest shopping mall.
Milan is world famous for its opera, being home to the Teatro alla Scala (La Scala).
Milan winters are typically damp and chilly, while summers are hot and humid. Average temperatures are -2/+4°C in January and +17/+29°C in July.
There are 80km of track on Milan Metro’s 3 lines, and a very extensive tram system.
Malpensa International Airport is linked to Milan Cadorna Station (connection with Milan's subway, the Suburban and the Regional Railway Service) by Malpensa Express. Trains depart from Terminal 1 every 30 minutes and the journey lasts about 40 minutes. Taxis are available but the service is not highly recommended because of traffic conditions in and outside Milan.
