About the Area for SilverDoor Serviced Apartments in Paris - Trocadero

Paris

Charles de Gaulle Airport is situated 14 miles north-east of Paris where the three terminals are connected via free shuttle buses. The quickest and cheapest way to get from the airport to Paris city centre is via the TGV. This takes 45 minutes and is signposted from the airport terminal. It is just a short walk to the station. Even if you have never used the French rail system before this is certainly the way to go as a Taxi would be very expensive.

The easiest way to get around Paris is on the Metro. There are Metro stations close to every public attraction and they serve the surrounding suburbs too. The best way to use the Metro is to buy a "carnet" - this is a set of 10 tickets which have virtually no expiry date and each ticket is valid for as many changes as you like on the Metro so long as you don’t exit and go above ground. For example you need two tickets for the outgoing and return journeys.

The main business sector of Paris is surrounding "La Grande Arch de La Defence" otherwise known as La Defence. This is the large grey arch visible over the road from the Arc de Triomphe. There is also an extensive shopping area here.

The most reasonable area in which to eat in central Paris is called the Latin Quarter and is close to Notre Dame. This is not as "touristy" as other areas and therefore has more reasonably priced menus. The most economic way to eat in restaurants is to buy a "menu a XX Euros", these will normally be a starter or dessert and main course off a set menu for a discounted price.

Trocadero

The Trocadero, site of the Palais de Chaillot, is an area in the 16th arrondissement across the Seine from the Eiffel Tower. The hill of the Trocadero is the hill of Chaillot, a separate village until the 19th century.

For the Exposition Internationale of 1937, the old Palais du Trocadero was demolished and replaced by the Palais de Chaillot which now tops the hill. It was designed in a classic modern style by architects Louis-Hippolyte Boileau, Jacques Carlu and Leon Azema. Like the old palace, the Palais de Chaillot features two wings shaped to form a wide arc: indeed, these wings were built on the foundations of those of the former building. However, unlike the old palace, the wings are independent buildings and there is no central element to connect them. Instead, a wide esplanade leaves an open view from the Place du Trocadero to the Eiffel Tower and beyond. The buildings are decorated with quotations by Paul Valery, and they now house a number of museums:

- the Musee national de la Marine (Naval Museum),

- the Musee de l'Homme (ethnology) in the southern (Passy) wing,

- the Musee National des Monuments Francais in the eastern (Paris) wing, from which one also enters the Theatre National de Chaillot, a theatre below the esplanade.

It was on the front terrace of the palace that Adolf Hitler was pictured during his short tour of the vanquished city in 1940, with the Eiffel Tower in the background. This became an iconic image of the Second World War.

It is in the Palais de Chaillot that the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10, 1948. This event is now commemorated by a stone, and the esplanade is known as the Esplanade des Droits de l'Homme ("esplanade of human rights").

Five avenues come from the Trocadero: Avenue Henri-Martin which goes to the Porte de la Muette and passes in front of the Lycee Janson de Sailly; Avenue Paul Doumer which goes to the Muette; Avenue d'Eylau which goes to the Place of Mexico; Avenue Kleber which goes to the Place de l'Etoile (where the Arc de Triomphe is situated); and Avenue d'Iena which go to the Musee Guimet. There is a big municipal library near the Trocadero's square.
