Nice is a major tourist centre and a leading resort on the French Riviera close to the Italian border, with almost 1million inhabitants. Its mediterranean climate allows warm sunny summers and mild winters, with temperatures rarely reaching the freezing point.
The beachfront is known as the Promenade des Anglais. On Sundays you see bicyclists and whole families out for a stroll along the Promenade. It has also become a favorite place for skateboarders and in-line skaters. In addition to numerous events such as the annual Carnival that take place along the Promenade, the blue chairs and cabanas are perfect for a lazy time along the Mediterranean shore and contemplating of the azur blue water of the Bay of Angels. Be wary that the Promenade today also attracts a large number of pickpockets.
The Côte d'Azur International Airport is on the Promenade des Anglais near l'Arénas. Due to its proximity to the Principality of Monaco, it also serves as that city-state's airport, with linking helicopter services.
Nice station was completed in 1867 and was built away from the centre, although the city now extends around the station. The station has been remodelled several times but always kept its original style of Arles stone sculptures and forged steel rooftop. The passenger hall is richly decorated and shadowed by balconies and a big clock. It has remained in its original condition since its opening although modern equipment has been installed to welcome the arrival of the TGV Sud-Est.
