Shanghai (Chinese: 上海) on the Yangtze River delta is the largest city in China with 17 million people. It is the commercial hub of modern China and its most important cultural, financial, industrial and communications center. Shanghai is also the world's largest cargo port.

Bus and metro fares run from ¥1 to ¥4 depending on distance (or between 12 to 50 US cents). Taxis in Shanghai are plentiful and charge around ¥11 (about $1 US) for 3 km.

The world’s first commercial Maglev railway connects Shanghai's Longyang Road subway station to Pudong International Airport. The 30km trip takes 7 minutes 21 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 431kmh (268mph).
