Windsor town is situated 21 miles (34 km) west of central London and 8 miles from Heathrow Airport. It is immediately south of the Thames, which forms its boundary with Eton. Windsor is accessible from J6 of the M4 motorway. Windsor and Eton Central train station has a shuttle service to Slough which runs trains into London Paddington and Windsor and Eton Riverside station provides services to London Waterloo.
Windsor Castle is a popular tourist destination and one of the official residences of the Royal Family. The castle was established by William the Conqueror soon after 1066 but has been substantially altered and added to over the centuries. The royal court transferred to the castle around 1110 during Henry I's reign.
Windsor is linked to Eton by Windsor Bridge which is now for pedestrians and cyclists only. It provides an excellent walking route from Windsor to Eton's High Street. To the south of the town lies Windsor Great Park, also popular with walkers and cyclists.
